Christmas Cleaning Checklist: A 3-Week Countdown

The most common Christmas cleaning mistake is saving it all for the 23rd. By then the cleaning has to compete with wrapping, shopping, cooking and a house that is already full of other people's plans.

This checklist spreads the work over three weeks. Each step is short, and the steps go in the order guests will notice them: the door, the bathroom, the table, the kitchen. Christmas 2026 falls on a Friday, so the countdown below starts on Friday 4 December.

Three weeks before

The slow jobs that cannot be rushed.

  • Clean the oven now, so it has time to cool and air out before you roast in it
  • Clear space in the fridge and freezer for the big meal and the leftovers
  • Wash the tablecloth and napkins and check them for stains while there is still time to treat them
  • Count chairs, plates, glasses and serving dishes; borrow or buy what is missing now, not on the 23rd
  • Declutter the entryway and the coat closet so guests have somewhere to put their coats

Two weeks before

  • Deep clean the guest bathroom: shower, toilet, floor and mirror
  • Wash the guest bedding and make up the guest bed
  • Wipe the mirrors, glass doors and window sills guests will walk past
  • Dust and vacuum the living room and dining room
  • Wash the throw blankets and cushion covers you will use on the sofa

One week before

  • Wipe light switches, door handles and the front door, the things everyone touches
  • Clear the dining table completely, because it is about to become a buffet or a wrapping station
  • Vacuum under and around the tree, and decide where the needles and decorations will be swept to each day
  • Clean the kitchen counters back to empty and run the dishwasher empty
  • Set up a drinks station away from the cooking area so the cook's path stays clear

The three days before

This is maintenance, not deep cleaning.

  • Put out a fresh hand towel and a spare roll of toilet paper where guests can find them
  • Empty every bin and put a spare liner in the bottom of each
  • Do a fifteen-minute reset of the main rooms each evening: surfaces clear, cushions straight, a quick vacuum
  • Clear the hallway and entry floor so coats and shoes have a place

Christmas Eve and Christmas morning

  • Fill the sink with hot soapy water before you start cooking, and clean as you cook
  • Empty the dishwasher before guests arrive so it can take the first load
  • Wipe the guest bathroom sink and mirror
  • Take out the kitchen trash
  • Light the candles. Stop cleaning.

What guests do not notice

You can skip these until January:

  • The inside of cupboards and drawers
  • Baseboards and the tops of door frames
  • The garage, the shed and the attic
  • Anything that is out of sight and out of the way

A house that is tidy where people stand and sit feels clean. A house that is scrubbed behind the sofa and chaotic by the front door does not.

If you already use a weekly schedule

Keep it going until the last week, then swap the Saturday deep clean for the job on this list that is still outstanding. Staying on one routine is easier than starting a second one in December. The free weekly cleaning schedule at the top of this page is built for exactly that.

If Thanksgiving is also on your calendar, the same logic is in the Thanksgiving cleaning checklist. And once the holiday is over, the Sunday home reset is the quickest way back to normal.

How long it takes

Rough time budgets, so you can see what you are signing up for. They depend on the size of the home, so treat them as a guide.

When About What it covers
Three weeks before 2 hours, in short blocks Oven, fridge, linens, the count of chairs and plates, the entryway
Two weeks before 90 minutes Guest bathroom, guest bed, glass and mirrors, living areas
One week before 60 minutes Touch points, dining table, the tree area, kitchen counters, drinks station
The last three days 15 minutes a day The evening reset and the guest details

The point is that no single evening is a big one. A job you can finish in twenty minutes gets done. A job that needs a weekend gets moved.

If you only have one week

Skip the first two sections and do this instead:

  1. The guest bathroom, the front door and the entry
  2. The guest bed and clean towels
  3. The dining table and the kitchen counters, cleared back to empty
  4. The fifteen-minute evening reset on each of the last three days

That covers what visitors actually see and use, which is most of the effect.

Common questions

When should I start? About three weeks before, which in 2026 is Friday 4 December. If you are reading this later, begin at whichever section matches the time you have left.

Do I need to deep clean everything? No. Deep clean the places guests use: the entry, the bathroom, the table and the kitchen. Everything else only needs to be tidy.

What if I am not hosting? Use the same list, scaled down. The entry, the kitchen and the main living space are enough, and the Christmas morning reset still makes the day calmer.

What about overnight guests? Add the guest bed, a clear surface and a drawer, a clean towel and a spare toilet roll. The two-weeks-before section covers all of it.
